04 — MIZA Framework
Skills, Will & Conditions
Organisations carry knowledge, skills and will. MIZA helps elevate all three — while examining the conditions around them.

Diagnose the constraint before choosing a response.
01Problem
When performance falls short, organisations often reach quickly for training. But training addresses only one possible constraint.
Performance may instead be limited by capability, motivation, leadership, structure, workload, resourcing, incentives, culture or systems.
02MIZA perspective
A performance symptom does not automatically identify a training need. The diagnosis separates constraints in knowledge, skill, will and the conditions around the work before selecting an intervention.
03Diagnostic
Assess knowledge, skill, will and conditions against a specific named performance gap.
04Dimensions
- Knowledge — do people understand what is required, and why?
- Skill — can they do it reliably under real conditions?
- Will — do they choose to do it given the incentives, priorities and pressures around them?
- Conditions — does the organisation make the desired behaviour possible through structure, workload, leadership, resources and systems?
05Method
Use interviews, observation, manager and peer input, workflow analysis, process review and performance evidence.
The method triangulates explanations rather than claiming to uncover a single universal cause.
06Sense-making
Look across the four variables instead of assuming training is the answer.
The same performance symptom can have different underlying constraints in different parts of the same organisation.
07Intervention
Where factors interact, they are addressed together.
- Knowledge → learning, information and clarity
- Skill → practice, capability development and coaching
- Will → leadership, incentives, accountability and motivation
- Conditions → structure, resources, workload, process and system redesign
08Measures
Measure the behaviour or outcome originally constrained. Training completion, attendance, confidence and satisfaction are not relied on as evidence of change.
09Output
Capability Lift Map — showing knowledge, skill, will and conditions, and identifying the most influential constraints and contributing factors.

Why this matters commercially
Don't spend on the most comfortable explanation. Spend on the constraint that matters.
